The State Room, witnessed.

The State Room wedding film and photography in Boston, made by a team that knows how the glass holds the light and when the harbor turns gold 33 floors below.

The elevator opens on the 33rd floor, the guests step into the Great Room, and the whole of Boston is suddenly at the windows. That is the moment we watch for every time we work here as State Room wedding videographers and photographers.

To have your State Room wedding filmed is to be filmed high above downtown Boston, at the top of 60 State Street, with the skyline and the harbor wrapped around the room. We offer wedding films and wedding photography here, separately or together.

The State Room is one of the Boston venues we know best from behind the camera. We have photographed and filmed many weddings here over the years, and what we learned on that floor, we carry into the next one.

The Space at The State Room: Glass, Height, and What the Room Demands

A ballroom at the top of 60 State Street

The State Room sits on the 33rd floor of 60 State Street in the Financial District, a short walk from Faneuil Hall. It is run by Longwood Venues, and its clean, contemporary rooms are designed to be set up almost any way a couple can imagine.

What the light actually does here

The Great Room is wrapped in 2,400 square feet of floor-to-ceiling glass, with 270-degree views of the Boston skyline and the harbor, and ceilings 21 feet high. By day the room fills with soft, even light off the water. At night it turns the other way: the city lights come up, and the glass can start to act like a mirror, so we light the room to keep the skyline in the frame instead of our own reflections.

The Custom House Tower stands close outside the windows, and as the evening comes on the harbor goes from blue to gold to a field of lights. Those minutes after sunset are the ones we plan the portraits around.

The staircase and the mezzanine

A floating staircase drops from the mezzanine into the Great Room. It makes one of the best entrances in Boston, and the mezzanine above gives us a high angle over the whole room, from the first dance to the last song.

The Great Room and the Harborside salons

According to the venue, the Great Room and mezzanine hold up to 560 guests for dinner and dancing and up to 900 for a cocktail reception. For a smaller wedding, the Harborside salons look out over the water, and retractable walls let the venue size the room to the guest list.

What makes filming a State Room wedding different

The State Room is one floor and one wall of glass, and the light on that glass changes all evening. A filmmaker there for the first time will spend part of the night chasing reflections and working out where the skyline sits behind each table. A team that has worked this room before arrives already knowing, and spends that time watching you instead.

It is also a venue where photography and cinema work together. The windows give stills their scale, and the staircase and the mezzanine give the film its movement. One team for both means one timeline, one plan for portraits at the glass, and one set of eyes on the day. That's how we approach every State Room wedding.
